Roger Bacon, I know, got in serious trouble with the church for trying to suggesting that "creation" was as fit a place to look for truth as scripture.
Tom Paine is very amusing on the poverty of the scripture writers' knowledge of how nature works. And he wasn't the only one who noticed this.

All this is nothing better than the jargon of a conjuror, who picks up phrases he does not understand, to confound the credulous people who have come to have their fortunes told. Priests and conjurors are of the same trade.

It is only the living grains that produce the next crop." But the metaphor, in any point of view, is no simile. It is succession, and not resurrection.
