it is true he had slaves. it's also true he personally opposed slavery. I would say that he was caught up within larger historical forces that precluded him from taking more direct action on this issue. If human beings had longer life spans and if he was still alive in the mid 19th century I would bet he would have worked to end the intitution of slavery.
