59. He doesn't represent Republicans.
He is a Democrat, and he was an early fighter in favor of civil rights, though obviously he doesn't want to see gays have civil rights.

What he represents is hate-filled, irrational fundamentalist Christianity, and since that is precisely what the Republican party has become, he has become strongly associated with them in the public mind. I think it says a lot that when ordinary people see this guy and his fellow nutcases, they automatically assume he must be a Republican.

Actually, he has run for office in Kansas more than once as a Democrat.
