142. I'll say this
For Y2K a lot of people who needed medication or thought they might need it did go across the border. Also, because antibiotics spoil, some bought generators to be sure their antibiotics could stay cold.

Three comments--

--Political climate between Mexico and U.S. has changed considerably (and between Canada and U.S. also but I have no personal knowledge of that) since 2000 for obvious reasons. Customs is no longer turning its head when people bring back more than a 3 month supply for personal use. Sometimes Customs seizes at random, and you can't bring back the medicine at all. Mexico now requires you to get an Rx from a Mexican doctor for drugs that are not OTC. This rule may not always be enforced but it could be. I've had no trouble bringing back medications from Mexico but my medications are OTC there even though they're Rx here -- so far, Customs has let 'em through with only a cursory glance. Your Mileage May Vary!

--Not legal to bring painkillers across any border. Even if you have an Rx, you are infringing on DEA territory here. Don't do it. It can be a prison offense. Yet people will need painkillers in a survival situation.

--Some people got some drugs from their vet instead of their doctor. Doggie Prozac is the same as human Prozac, Zovirax is the same whether you're bird or man, etc. Vet samples used to be substantially cheaper than an Rx from an MD. But vets expect you to use the drug as prescribed for the animal prescribed. I know someone who had an aging dog who had fits. He got a drug of abuse prescribed for the dog to control seizures, phenobarbital. I can't imagine that vets today are not aware of this tactic, and to me it always seemed a bit unethical to prolong the suffering of the animal.

Can you tell I spend too much time on the survivalism hobby? Must. Stop. Typing.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.
--John Mitchell, US Attorney General 1969-72
