during Vietnam I think is a large part of it. Pinko, commie liberal softies who want to hide and not fight. "All in the Family" debates between Archie and Mike rang true for many, many people.

I think the neo-cons picked up that vibe and just exaggerated it to the max. Edit: If you think about it; they're finally arguing with us about 30 years later. ;-)
