this is their tactic, to distract from the main point of the conversation by pointing out something irrelevant minor to the conversation. To get around this, I usually ignore their comment and continue on, even if they are still trying to continue with their pointless point.
Then if they call me on it, I just say it's irrelevant to the point. And unless they wish to have a civil conversation, it's over. They usually blather on, I zip it and walk away. They get really pissed at not having their inane comments acknowledged. :)
