13. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! That was a good one, SharonAnn!
Some people just have to hate some people--anyone will do. Catholics. Blacks. Jews. Gays. Immigrants. Protestants. Girls with icky hair. The hatred flavor of the month. And some politicians will always aim at the lowest, stupidest, "gut level" prejudices against whatever they perceive as the latest "scapegoat," or will manufacture one if necessary ("communists," gooks, ragheads, liberals).

I have always felt it to be the most vile quality in a politician, that they would stoop to stirring up racial hatred, because racism against blacks was the most visible and obnoxious hatred when I was young. (It was not long after hatred of Catholics was big, however--I remember the filthy pamphlets that circulated in rightwing circles during JFK's campaign for president in 1960.)

When Daddy Bush permitted the "Willie Horton" ad (a blatantly racist ad) against Dukakus in the presidential campaign in the late 1980s, I was profoundly offended, and put off him forever. Nothing is so low, in my opinion.

So, don't expect hatred to be rational. It comes from some unlighted place in the human soul, where foul things dwell, and can aim--or be directed by powermongers--at anyone, at any time, for any reason. In the religious wars in Europe among Christian factions--something that our Founders designed our government to prevent here--the most despicable deeds were done in the name of one "purer" faction of this religion, against the imagined "evil" of the other faction, while there was hardly a hair's difference between them, to any rational person. Torture, death--because you did or didn't say Mass in church, or recite the right prayers.

I pray to Saint Jefferson and Saint Madison to spare of us any such horror in the land of the free and the home of the brave, and to help us heal this part of the human soul before it's too late. The torture of Islamics in the name of a Christian God and our inability to stop this outrage are very worrisome.

Give the American people transparent elections, though, and I think we will put it right.
