...the kids and I are celebrating the Winter Solstice by learning of the celebrations that other cultures have during the same time period. Tmas, Kwanza, Hannakah, whatever else we can dig up. It reinforced that there's something about those four times of the year that ring as common cause for marking the event thru a variety of rituals, most similiar in many ways. Winter and Summer Solstices, Autumn and Spring Equinoxes. Maybe then, if they do decide to celebrate "Christmas", they'll celebrate the ways in which it differs and is unique from the other celebrations, rather than just the commonality of crass commercialism and guady displays.
