Diversity, plurality...these principles of liberalism can bring together broad coalitions of different groups; as such, it also lacks an "authoritarian center" around which the other side coalesces. That center holds them together and provides direction with easy top-down answers, while our side believes in reaching mutually beneficial (but difficult to reach) consensus. The latter is of more value in terms of a healthier, more vibrant society, but the former "makes the trains run on time," as people always say about fascism.

This is an overly simplified summary, but that's what I basically believe.
