Bribes, Lies and Orange Juice

The Bush brothers' secret citrus deals.
Not a lot of people realise that Jeb Bush made a big contribution to the Cancun World Trade talks last month. Taking time out of his busy schedule to fly to Washington, on September 10th he took it upon himself to fight the oppressive regimes dominating the talks, and defend his country against those destructive G21 representatives. He’s taken little credit for it, but the world should know.

Jeb has saved the south coast

With his own inimitable brand of big name backers and bully-boy tactics, the ‘other’ Bush was one of the little voices in Cancun chairman Ernesto Derbez’s head telling him to stick to his guns over agricultural tariff reform. G21 didn’t stand a chance against Jeb’s altruistic arguments, which were laid before an appreciative audience of journalists in the capitol. His main point of order was the damage that could be done to orange growers in southern Florida if Brazil, with its starving and therefore cheap excess of workers, was allowed to sell to the US without trade barriers. He said:

“If the Brazilians were operating on a level playing field, I would not feel as comfortable advocating this position of being very cautious about lowering tariffs.”I’m confident that we can be an advocate for free trade and still recognise that there’s some unique circumstances as it relates to American agriculture.”

Under the World Trade Organization, America’s current tariff adds nearly 30 cents to the price of every gallon of orange juice imported today, helping to protect Florida’s $9.1 billion citrus industry from the normal rules of globalisation.
