20. VMI is one of those creepy schools with secrets galore.
When in college in the early 80's, one of my friends dated a VMI cadet from Alabama (son of Sen Jeremiah Denton, the nutso exPOW/Senator that publically stated it is impossible for a husband to rape his wife, that he is entitled to what is his). She was going to the homecoming dance and made arrangements from me to have a date with one of her boyfriend's fellow cadets. The pomp and circumstance was so friggin stupid, but I figured boys will be boys. When at the football game, we silly Southern women did not bring coats and it was freezing, the cadets took off their wool overcoats and gave them to us. Though this was a very polite thing to do, the cadets were called on it, ordered to take back their coats and given demerits as they were out of uniform. A big deal was made of it in the stands.

Do you think as big a deal will be made of these costumes? I doubt it.

side note: I learned that my date was drummed out of VMI later that school year in a middle of the night ceremony complete with candle light and all of his fellow cadets turning their back on him. I wonder if he recognizes how lucky he was?
