The history of civilization shows that civil rights for human beings moves, slowly, in fits and starts, only in one direction: towards freedom - not away from it. At some point in the future, all this hysteria about which gender someone is hotwired by nature to fall in love with will seem as irrational in retrospect as interracial marriage taboos seem to us now.

What rational straight people can do in the meantime is to stand up to people like Reggie White and explain that this is not a "moral" issue, that innate sexuality has nothing to do with being "right" or "wrong" and that gays and lesbians, and gay and lesbian couples, deserve the same rights and responsibilities in society that everyone else has.

This ain't rocket science.
