Seriously, the "guy" as Father Christmas, or Kris Kringle, or St. Nicholas draws on many European legends and was largely contemporized by illustrator Thomas Nast in Harper's in late 1800s.

"Night Before Xmas" poem was written in 1823 by Clement Moore.
