AMBER ALERT

CONVICTED murderer Scott Peterson's mistress Amber Frey (above) is getting used to her new status as a celebrity author. Frey, who has signed to write a memoir with Judith Regan, celebrated the deal with the publisher at Mr. Chow Wednesday night and enjoyed her share of attention even as Star Jones arrived in an eye-popping white mink, the cast of "The Apprentice" clowned around, and Nicky Hilton and Kevin Connolly cuddled. Author Kurt Vonnegut was not happy, however, cooling his heels at the bar waiting for a table.

CHEVY CHASE GOES DOWN IN THE GUTTER

HOLLYWOOD has-been Chevy Chase lashed out at President Bush at a liberal love-in Tuesday night, calling the commander-in-chief a "dumb f - - k." Chase was master of ceremonies at People for the American Way's Defender of Democracy awards gala at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. But the organization got more than it bargained for when Chase went off the rails in a potty-mouthed rant, the Washington Post reports. "This guy in office is an uneducated, real schmuck," Chase fumed, "and we still couldn't beat him with a bore like Kerry." He then joked about Cabinet changes, "The Bush sisters have resigned and are being replaced by Paris and Nicky Hilton." "I thought it was utterly untoward," PAW founder Norman Lear told the paper, "obviously unexpected and unscripted and all that stuff . . . It was Chevy Chase. He'll live with it, I won't." PAW President Ralph Neas called Chase's remarks "inappropriate and offensive."
