If you want to know why our MSM are so pathetic in dealing with issues with the intellectual rigor one needs to deal with them, there is one word we can use: Pattern Recognition. While they may be able to write down details of any single item ( may be even truthfully) they are ill equipped to see patterns in the behavior of our ruling classes. Some of it comes from lack of historical knowledge of the type some of our famous correspondents like William Shirer and Harrison salisbury had, but also because of the proximity of our Press to power and their own exalted ways of living. They tend to identify with the moneyed classes and look down on the travails of ordinary citizens. This leads to what Alex Cockburn has rightly called their desire to ignore the obvious. When you cannot recall Condi Rice's pattern of lies and deceit and are reduced to dealing with her as though she has any credibility left, you are obviously part of the problem yourself.
