Have you read Straus and Howe? Having read them, and done what is a pretty basic review of American history and my own family's history, I have come to the conclusion that religion is going to be a part of the equation for at least another 10 years. In that case, it is a matter of taking the issue from them, i.e. the RW.

I am completely with you on the attacks comments. I think unfortunately we (Americans in general) have a short attention span and our (Democrats/progressives) job is going to be to figure out how to answer those attacks in a short, concise, sound bite manner that challenges current religious dogma.
