Are slow and stodgy. They don't just change things willy-nilly. They want things to be done slowly to see if they will work before implementing a new phase of the action. They wouldn't just throw families off welfare, they would implement a series of graduated programs over a number of years to "wean" them off.

They wouldn't change a jot of our Constitution even under threat of torture.

They get lots of advice and congressional approval before doing rash things like going off to war. (which is why the Iraq thing is not a war, and neither was the Gulf thing. They are/were "military actions")

They generally feel the government should keep it's nose out of the affairs of individuals and businesses. So, the move to decriminalize homosexual behaviour was a progressive action for a conservative cause. (the best of both worlds a balance between the forces)

A conservative thinks that taxes should benefit those that pay them. So taxes should pay for your clean air, clean meat, school system and so on rather than bloated federal programs, well, like the IRS which I have heard uses a major portion of the taxes it collects just to keep itself in business.


You can be a conservative Democrat. Conservatism is not the problem. The term has been tainted, thanks to the Uber-NeoCon Newt Gingrich. His slimy tendrils will continue to cling to politics for a few more generations I'm afraid.
