WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Sen. Mark Dayton called Friday for the beginning of a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, making him one of the first members of Congress to spell out a specific U.S. exit strategy. "Getting out of Iraq in months, instead of years, is wise," the Minnesota Democrat said. "We should do it on our stated terms, not on anyone else's. We phase ourselves out, we phase Iraqis in."

Dayton, long a critic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, made his comments in an impassioned floor speech.

Dayton said that he continues to believe the United States must help Iraq rebuild, but with a diminishing military presence, which he says has become a political liability throughout the Arab world. "Paradoxically, every day we are fighting the war in Iraq, we are weakening our defenses against terrorism," he said.

White House officials rejected Dayton's plan, as did Coleman.
In a statement, Coleman called Dayton's plan "a good example of why we leave fighting wars to generals, not politicians. Our commitment to fighting terrorism must be clear," (:puke:) Coleman said. "America made a commitment to make Iraq safe, secure and free, and it's a commitment that must be kept."
