Because they will
It'll be part of the _ Iraq didn't go as well as it could have _ list of excuses that will be used in the future (and even now) to rationalize why Bush can't be blamed
Recall the "bad intel" excuse?...Bush didn't lie about intelligence or trump up evidence (even though we all know he did)...he got bad intel from those smart people he surrounds himself with...so it's not Bush's fault...
See? It's those smart people's fault for not doing their jobs properly.
Well, Rove is saying the same about Congress...they didn't do their job properly...and the beauty of that lie is...there is some truth to that one. Congress did join the rush to invade - for whatever reasons they had.
Congress should have investigated the claims made more and not just accept them.Congress could have held off on the vote.
Now, none of that changes the fact that the Bush administration lied and trumped up evidence...but you can see how well it will play.
They'll also be pushing the public opinion angle more and more.
From the beginning they've hinted at it...how if public opinion isn't in favor of the "war" then it will go bad. Same BS excuse they used with Vietnam. It was the people's fault for not "staying the course"
And they'll blame the Generals on the ground for execution of the "war"
All these excuses why it should have gone better and how it is not Bush's fault.
And how if it all falls a part after Bush is out of office (never mind how SNAFU it is now), it isn't his fault because he tried...
And some people will buy it all...
They want the "opinion" debate...that's what they're setting up
You and I know Bush is criminal and his actions were and are criminal...but they want to set it all up as a matter of opinion.
They want one side to say this is what really happened and the other side to say -Oh, no! That's just those defeatist liberal Bush haters spinning history. Because then all of Bush's crimes becomes a matter of (biased or unbiased) opinion instead of cold hard fact.
And as long as Bush is not held accountable for his crimes, America will be treating Bush's crimes as a matter of opinion instead of the fact we know them to be...
As long as phrases like "mistakes made" and "policy failures" are used for what are, in fact, crimes, then whether or not Bush committed crimes - and he has - becomes a matter of opinion.
