9. UPDATE: Kitzhaber gaining ground
The (Portland) Oregonian reported Dudley was leading but Kitzhaber was gaining ground. At mid-afternoon, Kitzhaber had narrowed his deficit by about 4,000 votes and trailed by about 11,000 (0.9 percent).

The newspaper said thousands more ballots were yet to be counted across Oregon, including the Democratic stronghold of Multnomah where there was a last-minute surge of voting reported.

The Oregonian noted there will be an automatic recount if the margin winds up within 0.2 percent of the total votes cast, or about 3,000 votes. Either candidate could request a recount if the margin is wider but would have to pay for it.
