In general our populace is more pacifist in dealing with governmental outrages than its ever been.

By today's standards, the Boston Tea Party folks would be branded as vandalist scum. Those New Yorkers who shut down their economy over the Stamp Act (?) would be branded as radical communists, and the next generation that engaged in riots over the cost of flour, well .. forget it.

I guess it depends on what the crime is. In this particular case, the demonstrators did what they were asked. What's unusual is that they demanded that someone who hangs in the background, in a totally unaccountable position (where the voters are concerned) be treated as otherwise.
