that "Bush panicked." That is ridiculous. The torture went on for SEVEN YEARS. It was methodical, and completely thought out, including arranging for Yoo's memos to try to cover their war criminal asses. The only thing we don't yet know is what it was really all about.

My guess:

Seeking out and torturing/killing people to erase all traces of Bush Junta connection to 9/11, or other huge crimes, such as weapons trafficking. It recently came out that Cheney had a hit squad going into countries and targeting individuals and killing them. They likely had a torture squad as well, targeting people to be kidnapped who had info they wanted for coverups of their crimes, or for business purposes, and these were flown to Guantanamo Bay or to torture dungeons around the world, and there were probably many murders after they were through with their victims.

The random roundup of innocents was cover for this activity. They picked up youngsters. They picked up soldiers who had a gun in their hand, merely thinking to protect their country from foreign invasion. They paid warlords and others for "enemy combatants"--who were no such thing. They arrested, jailed and tortured people for stealing bread, or for doing nothing at all. This seemingly insane, pointless and extremely counter-productive policy begins to make sense when you look at it as cover for the targeted tortures. If the targeted tortures were conducted "to keep us safe," why was all this cover needed--all these senseless arrests and ruinations of innocent lives?

I don't believe that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld & brethren did anything with the motive of "keeping us safe." So what was their motive? It certainly was NOT "Bush panicking." That would be laughable, if the subject were not so....utterly horrible.
