our principal used a canvas strap made from the pickup reel of a combine on your hands. Even back in the 70s I can only recall it being used rarely.

In grade school though we did have a few teachers that weren't shy about giving you a few slaps across the butt when you pissed them off. I remember my mother telling me that if she ever found out one of my teachers had to spank me, I'd get it again at home. I believed her and took the threat seriously because in a rural environment we all knew each other.
