If immigration is out of sympathy for the poor, then demanding $2000 is contrary to that goal. It basically makes clear that only people with means and aren't supporting a family can stay.

On the other hand, if the point of immigration is to get cheap labor for wages that Americans won't accept, then why would they pay anything at all? They've already paid by aiding our economy working for shit. The fact is, the reason why they don't have $2000 and they are good for america are the same. In fact, we would be requiring anyone who had $2000 to leave and only the most destitute can stay.
