Lawmakers tell Rice they need more on Iraq plans

WASHINGTON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sought to reassure skeptical lawmakers on Wednesday the Bush administration had a plan for Iraq but faced strong criticism for not having a strategy to get troops home.

...

"We have to level with the American people," Ohio Republican George Voinovich told Rice in her first testimony to the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee in eight months. "This is another world war," he added.

...

"Even if withdrawal timelines are deemed unwise because they might provide a strategic advantage to the insurgency, the American people need to more fully understand the basis upon which our troops are likely to come home," said Indiana Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, chairman of the committee.

...

Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, the top-ranking Democrat on the panel, said no one was suggesting the United States should cut and run, but senators needed more details.

"What's the plan, Stan? Tell us," said Biden.
