Trent Lott collects more than $1M for campaign

WASHINGTON — Sen. Trent Lott has raised more than $1 million to defend his seat in the first re-election race he faces since losing a party leadership post.

The Mississippi Republican, who was ousted from his job as head of Senate Republicans in 2002, faces re-election in November 2006. The deadline to qualify as a candidate in Mississippi is March 1, and Lott has no challengers yet. But he appears to have stepped up his fund raising.

More than half of Lott's donations came from political action committees, or PACs. Many, like the American Bankers Association PAC, the Anadarko Petroleum Corp. PAC and the CSX Corporation PAC, represent big business.

Most of the individuals who donated more than $200 to Lott's campaign live outside Mississippi. For example, 16 of the 133 individuals who donated to Lott's campaign between April 1 and June 30 were Mississippians.
