Navy Panel Recommends New Search For Speicher

POSTED: 12:28 pm EDT July 7, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A board of inquiry reviewing the latest search for a Navy pilot missing since his jet was shot down 14 years ago during the first Iraq war recommends that the Pentagon step up its efforts to find him, according to Sen. Bill Nelson.

Navy Capt. Michael Scott Speicher, a native of Jacksonville who was flying off the USS Saratoga, is classified as missing/captured by the Department of Defense.

After reviewing the report, Nelson recommended to Navy Secretary Gordon England that Speicher's status be retained since the board found no evidence to suggest that he is dead.

The board of inquiry was formed at the direction of Secretary England to review evidence gathered over the past two years by a team that searched for clues to Speicher's fate in Iraq.
