Nashville-area woman is believed to be behind a string of 17 bomb and anthrax threats — many adorned with drawings of smiley faces — that were sent through the mail and left in public places in recent weeks, federal prosecutors said yesterday.

One such threat reads: ''There is a bomb at the bus shelter to blow all you bad sinners to hell at 10:00. There is Anthrax up here too.'' The note was cited in a criminal complaint spelling out the evidence against the suspect. That note included a smiley face figure.

Piettia Heifner York, 47, of Kingsbury Drive in Forest Hills faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted on a charge of making a bomb threat. more

Letters, two bearing Knoxville postmarks, were mailed to a Brentwood synagogue, Metro police headquarters and the city of Forest Hills. Fourteen others were found around Davidson County at locations including the downtown public library, 100 Oaks Mall, a Madison Wal-Mart and on a public bus, the criminal complaint says.
