Saturday 17 April 2004, 10:56 Makka Time, 7:56 GMT

A bomb apparently aimed at a US patrol has exploded in central Baghdad, injuring an Iraqi policeman.

According to Aljazeera's correspondent, witnesses said an explosive device hit a convoy of Land Cruisers in which Iraqi policemen or intelligence officers were driving. They subsequently opened fire in the area.

Witnesses told Reuters the bomb had been placed under a pile of bricks across the street from a pharmacy.
