I especially agree with your statement about Obama coming across as a wimp. Even when people don't fully agree with a President on a position they like to see a strong leader. It's always seemed like a test that Americans have for their leaders. If they can't stand up for anything, if won't fight for what they think is right (what he campaigned on and was elected on) then how are they going to stand up for me? Wimpiness just isn't American. So the base feels betrayed and lied to, the moderate middle doesn't see anyone with any kind of strong beliefs and the right feels free to walk all over him.
The realization that this isn't who we elected is dawning on a lot of people now so these numbers could be difficult to improve.
