APGOLDSBORO, N.C. — A North Carolina jury says a former Marine is guilty of first-degree murder in the death of a pregnant colleague whose remains were found under a backyard firepit.
The jury of seven women and five men decided 23-year-old Cesar Laurean of Las Vegas was guilty of killing 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach of Vandalia, Ohio, in December 2007. The two were assigned to the same logistics unit at Camp Lejeune.

This has most likely fallen off a lot of people's radar, but I think it's important to note this verdict. This is the case from a few years back that shed a lot of light on abuse that women soldiers endure in the military, and how the military turns a blind eye, in most cases, to that abuse. Maria Lauterbach died a horrific death in this man's backyard because he was afraid that his career would be hurt if it became known he had slept with her.
During the course of the trial, the defense tried to discredit Ms. Lauterbach by portraying her as a compulsive liar. I'm not sure what sentence this man is looking at, but from where I sit, he needs to be put away for life.
