Malawi gay couple sentenced to 14 years in jail

A judge in Malawi has sentenced a gay couple to 14 years in prison after they were convicted of gross indecency and unnatural acts.

Steven Monjeza, 26, and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, were arrested in December 2009 after holding an engagement ceremony.

They have been in jail ever since.

Their arrest sparked international condemnation and a debate about homosexuality in the country.
