I come from an upper middle-class, university-educated family. We're not trailer trash. Nevertheless...

A male partner of one of my in-laws has an absolutely horrific history of merciless abuse at the hands of his step-father, including beatings, captivity and psychological torture, throughout his childhood and teenage years. A woman I know very well was continuously sexually abused from the age of two to 15, by two adult family members in sequence. I was at a party once where all of the five women had experienced one or more of sexual abuse, sexual assault or outright rape. A female family member of mine was drugged and raped by one of her room-mate's friends, and when he was done he left the condom inside her to find when she came to.

What is wrong with us? Is it our gender, our genetics, our culture, what?
