222. He ran in every primary and caucus.

He split the first three primaries by carrying the rural counties while Hillary concentrated her campaign on the urban vote (irony alert: after working hard to depress the vote in Las Vegas, Las Vegas County ended up being the *only* county Hillary carried in Nevada).

After that it was apparent to everyone -- except the Clinton campaign -- that the primary was going to carry long past Super Tuesday. He prepared. She did not. He won.

If your question is, why did people vote for Obama, they voted for him because the central theme of his campaign was to represent all Americans. Not White America or Black America. Not rural America or urban America.

Do I have to repeat the whole speech that made him famous?

In another words, they voted for Obama because they wanted him to be bipartisan.

We see these divisions on DU all the time. Rural, White Americans want the right to carry firearms when they visit the city ignoring the reality that an African-American caught with a firearm, even legally, is going to be treated like a criminal and is far more likely to be gunned down by the cops than use his firearm in self defense. Urban Americans want to ban firearms in rural America ignoring the reality of dangerous animals and that it typically takes 20 minutes or longer for the police to reach your home in the country.

Rural Americans have this dumbass idea that the suburbs are "the same thing" as the city. Urban Americans have this dumbass idea that the suburbs are rural.

Obama knows rural America. Obama knows urban America. He successfully bridged that divide in the election.

And so he won.
