The AR-15 platform (non-automatic centerfire .22) dominates competitive and recreational target shooting, for example, and is the most popular defensive carbine in U.S. homes. Altogether, more Americans own "assault weapons," as defined by H.R.1022 et seq, than hunt.

You appear to be confusing "assault weapons" (small- and intermediate-caliber, non-automatic civilian rifles with modern styling) with restricted NFA Title 2/Class III military weapons.
