I think he was using the unwillingness of so many to give up their SUVs as an example of the sense of entitlement that seems to be so much a part of the American collective consciousness (reinforced, no doubt, by the continuous bombardment of propaganda from corporate pop media). Even many liberals and progressives believe they have a "right" to operate a large, inefficient utility vehicle as a personal mode of transportation, when they could be driving a vehicle that gets at least twice the fuel mileage. This self-centered attitude is likely carried over into other areas of their lives as well, as indicated by the replies on the thread to which the other poster linked.
While SUVs are not THE cause of global climate change, they most certainly make a contribution, and their widespread use as a personal vehicle is a clear indicator of the prevailing attitudes of U.S. Americans.
