Steelers Owner's Kin Won't Challenge (Katherine) Harris

March 29, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Tom Rooney, nephew of Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, said Wednesday he won't challenge Katherine Harris for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

Rooney, an attorney in Jupiter, said the decision was not based on Harris' recent decision to use $10 million of her own money to stay in the race.

But he said it had become clear to him he didn't have time to establish a viable challenge, and he wasn't interested "playing spoiler for somebody or just running to lose."

The departure of Rooney, 35, leaves the GOP with Harris as its lone candidate.
