12. Russia's real 'crime'
is not its lack of democracy or any intelligence aid to Iraq (this has been going on for decades) or its backing for the dodgy despot of Belarus. I am not sure it is even its recent attempts to defend Iran in the UN. What has really rattled the US government is the fact it has signed a long term trade deal with the Chinese that look like preventing the energy crunch that the Bush administration was hoping to use to curtail the rise of China as a global economic and political superpower.

One can not help wondering whether the sudden deterioration in Sino-Japanese relations and the announcement of the cancellation of new yen loans to China is not unconnected to this event.

I expect the relationship between the two global power blocks to be headed downhill fast from now on. It is not going to be a pleasant ride.
