Suffering from sinking approval ratings and disappointment from some in their conservative base, Republicans face a challenging election year, former President Reagan aide Ed Meese said Tuesday in Reno.
But the Democratic alternative will keep the GOP in power, particularly in Nevada, Meese said.
Acknowledging fiscal conservatives are unhappy with federal spending under a Republican Congress, Meese said it would be worse if Democrats were in charge.
"I hope people realize what the real stakes are," he said. "If Democrats took over the leadership posts, you would have some of the most irresponsible people in Congress as committee chairmen. Not only would there be an increase in irresponsible spending, you would also have a major tax increase. And that would hurt the economy."
He was campaigning for Assembly candidate Ty O. Cobb, whose father worked closely with Meese in the Reagan administration. Dissatisfaction with U.S. Sen. Harry Reid's performance as minority leader will drive Republican success in Nevada, Meese said.
