Billboard company rejects anti-Schmidt ads

By Malia Rulon
Enquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - An advertising company told the Democratic Party on Friday that it won't put up billboards attacking Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt that 7,000 people across the country paid to run unless changes are made.

The Democratic National Committee had started a fund-raising campaign this week - pulling in $250,000 - to put up billboards in Schmidt's Southwest Ohio district saying "Shame on You, Jean Schmidt: Stop Attacking Veterans. Keep Your Eye on the Ball - We Need a Real Plan for Iraq."

The ads tell people to call Schmidt's Portsmouth office and include a disclaimer stating that they were paid for by the national committee.

But Lamar Advertising Co., which owns the billboards in Portsmouth where the ads were to be placed, told the committee that the company objected to the content of the message.
