(CNN) -- A doctor at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba said 23 detainees who are on a hunger strike have been given feeding tubes to prevent their deaths, and denied they are protesting their treatment at the U.S. military facility.
The doctor spoke to CNN on the condition his name would not be released, fearing reprisals from prisoners.
"They are malnourished because they have hunger-struck for a significant amount of time," the doctor said. "At one point in each of these individuals we did intervene to prevent the unnecessary loss of life." Since Aug. 8, the number of detainees refusing food has slowly increased from several dozen to about 128, nearly a quarter of the prison's population, according to Pentagon statistics.
The doctor said the reason the strikers are refusing food is to protest their detention. (Posted 2:58 p.m.) ********************* On Edit: What will they say when ALL OF THE DETAINEES are on feeding tubes?
