The '80's were when the U.S. government under Reagan with Bush I, Rummy, et. al. in tow were giving money and arms to have Saddam do US dirty work in waging war against Iran. There was a $5 billion loan that was money laundered through an Italian bank in Georgia, I think, that was paid to Saddam and he never paid it back---thus, it's thought, the reason for the first war in Iraq under Bush I.

Saddam has a lot he could spill about our own government if he's tried for crimes against Iran.
