The landlord is the one who writes the check, true, but those landlords would not stay in business if they weren't making a profit, over and above all the things you mention that need to be paid for. And did I mention equity?

I don't think the mortgage tax break should be eliminated, but let's not pretend that it's fair to renters and poor folks.
