Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base on O'ahu.

Twenty-seven Kaneohe-based Marines were among the 31 servicepeople killed today in a helicopter crash in Iraq, U.S. Sen Daniel Akaka confirmed.

"I am deeply saddened by this event — I am stunned that so many lives were lost in a single incident," Akaka, D-Hawaii, said in a news release.

As well he should be. By comparison, all of O'ahu had 68 traffic fatalities in all of 2004 (as of Dec. 22). :(
