One could argue that with 19% of the soldier force, African American and only 10% of the dead in IOF, blacks are enjoying the benefits of military service but not the same drawbacks in porportion to their numbers.

http://www.sftt.org/dwa/2003/1/8/6.html

"In the six military operations since then, blacks have comprised 15 percent of combat fatalities while making up 13 percent of the population. Still, say the authors, that 15 percent is 'considerably below' the percentage of blacks in the active-duty army (about 19 percent). Trends suggest that this will be even less of an issue in the future. Today's military finds more blacks than ever in military occupations where they are less likely to physically engage the enemy."

And of course the same thing could be said about women - with an Army porportion of 15% they have only been 2% of the casualties.
