There is a problem with your reasoning here, and that is that an increasing share of retail sales are going over the net. This is not counted in government stats. It has nothing to do with a "mood" and a lot to do with Amazon.com or B&N. Heck, I don't even shop in mainstream retail stores any more if possible.
