KABUL, Afghanistan - A Turkish engineer and two Afghans were apparently kidnapped Tuesday in eastern Afghanistan (news - web sites) in an area where bandits, insurgents from the Taliban and other Islamic extremist groups operate, officials said.
A car the men used to travel daily from Jalalabad to a road construction project in Kunar province's Chawki district was found abandoned, said Abdul Bari, director of the Interior Ministry Anti-terrorism division.
He identified the missing Turk as Mohammad Ayub, who was accompanied by his driver and a translator.
About 200 police, Afghan troops and coalition forces searched the area and in nearby mountains about 110 miles east of the capital, Kabul.
