‘US working to strengthen legal system in developing countries’

Staff Report

KARACHI: US Consul-General at Karachi Douglas C Rohn said on Tuesday the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom were committed to engaging governments and the social sector in strengthening the legal system in developing countries for realisation of the fact that a strong legal system was vital for economic and political development of these countries.

He was speaking at a select gathering of judges and lawyers at the inauguration ceremony of the American Legal Discovery Centre (ALDC) in the Sindh High Court Bar Library.

He said by now it had been realised that a strong legal system could alone guarantee political and economic development in developing countries.“The US and UK governments are, therefore, working hard for ensuring transparency in the justice system all over the world on the model of developed countries and share the traditions of respect for law,” he said.

Rohn said the US embassy in Pakistan had launched the ALDC project to equip seven libraries in Pakistan with access to latest in legal information and to provide an opportunity to the Pakistani legal community, scholars and researchers to broaden their knowledge of the legal system of the United States.
