HO CHI MINH CITY - Vietnam prepared to welcome on Friday the arrival of a United Airlines jumbo jet making the first passenger flight by an American carrier to the communist nation since the fall of Saigon in 1975.

Flight UA869 from San Francisco via Hong Kong was scheduled to land at 10:25 pm (1525 GMT) at Tan Son Nhat international airport in Ho Chi Minh City, the former capital of the US-backed South Vietnamese regime.

Vietnamese officials and US took part in a ceremony to see off the plane on its historic journey from San Francisco, and further celebrations were planned upon its arrival here. snip

The last commercial passenger flight linking the United States and Vietnam was a Pan Am service that left Saigon on April 24, 1975, a week before it fell to communist forces.
