49. In another appointment announced on Thursday

A high school dropout, Bernard Kerik, 49, joined the NYPD in 1986, working as a beat officer in Times Square. He rose through the ranks to become police commissioner in 2000, under then Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. He stepped down at the end of 2001, when the mayor's term of office expired. Last year, he spent time in Iraq, trying to rebuild the country's police force after the defeat of Saddam Hussein.

In another appointment announced on Thursday, Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns has been chosen as the new agriculture secretary. "For someone who grew up on a dairy farm, to be asked by the president of the United States to serve as ag secretary is about as big as it gets," he said, after joining Mr Bush for the announcement at the White House. "After growing up on a dairy farm ... everything in life has seemed easy," he added. Mr Johanns has led trade missions to more than 10 countries, and promoted US farm exports.
